Precise Barber College

The Precise Barber College is a fully accredited barber school, and a social enterprise of Covenant House California. The school provides the best in barber training for both paying students, and homeless youth, alike.

Fully accredited by the State of California, the school will be unique in a number of ways, including: 1) a fun learning environment taught by successful local barbers, who have been trained in trauma-informed methods of teaching and interacting with students; 2) provides a curriculum that adds the basic financial literacy and small-business acumen, to help students prepare for life after school; and 3) highlights and requires community service as a means for students to serve, and understand their influence in the community.

The school was inspired by barber Gabriel Torres, who after a near death experience, dreamt of providing disadvantaged youth with an opportunity to fulfill their own dreams of living full productive lives. Encouraged by Covenant House California CEO, Bill Bedrossian, who saw the opportunity to provide homeless youth with legitimate career opportunities, and sustainable independence, the two began meeting to plan the school in the summer of 2016.

In 2017, the school was seeded with an innovation grant through the Goldhirsch Foundation’s LA2050 fund. Students’ tuition payments ensure the school’s sustainability, along with opportunities for donors to provide scholarships for additional homeless youth to attend the school. The school will also have a fully operational barber shop for paying customers, and will provide job opportunities. The dream is to open a second site, in NorCal within the next five years!
